Do you know what is OEE?

In today’s competitive manufacturing landscape, efficiency is everything. But how do you measure efficiency in a meaningful and actionable way? That’s where Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) comes into play. At Fabrico.io, we’re passionate about helping businesses unlock the full potential of their operations, and OEE is a critical metric to achieve this goal.

The Origins of OEE

OEE was created by Seiichi Nakajima, a pioneer of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), in the 1960s. Nakajima developed OEE as a key metric to help manufacturers improve their operational efficiency by identifying and addressing the most significant sources of loss in production systems. Originally adopted in Japan, OEE has since gained global recognition as a cornerstone of Lean Manufacturing and operational excellence.

Breaking Down OEE

OEE is a standard for measuring manufacturing productivity. It tells you how effectively your equipment is being used compared to its full potential. In other words, it identifies the percentage of manufacturing time that is truly productive.

OEE is calculated using three key components:

  1. Availability — Measures downtime losses by calculating the ratio of actual operating time to planned production time. If your equipment is not running when it should, your availability score will reflect that.

  2. Performance — Evaluates the speed losses. It measures whether your equipment is running as fast as it’s designed to. Even if your machines are operational, slow cycles can impact your performance score.

  3. Quality — Accounts for defects and rework. A high-quality score indicates that the products manufactured meet quality standards without requiring rework or scrapping.

OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality

A perfect OEE score of 100% means that you’re producing only good parts, as fast as possible, with no downtime.

Why Does OEE Matter?

Implementing OEE tracking empowers manufacturers to identify and eliminate inefficiencies, reduce downtime, and improve overall productivity. Here’s why it matters:

  • Pinpoint Bottlenecks: By analyzing OEE data, manufacturers can identify where losses are occurring and take targeted action.

  • Benchmark Performance: Compare equipment performance across shifts, lines, or facilities to identify best practices.

  • Drive Continuous Improvement: Use OEE as a foundation for Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma initiatives.
